SEOUL, July 12 (Yonhap) -- South Korea has won the right to host the world's premier youth baseball tournament next year, the national baseball governing body said Thursday.

The Korea Baseball Softball Association (KBSA) said Gijang County, Busan, will host the 2019 World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-18 Baseball World Cup.

"We told WBSC chief Riccardo Fraccari at the WBSC Congress in Botswana last year about our plans to host the tournament," the association said. "Gijang Country in Busan, which hosted the 2016 WBSC Women's Baseball World Cup, expressed a strong desire to stage the tournament, so we made a bid and won."

South Korea will host the tournament for the second time. The country previously staged the U-18 Baseball World Cup in Seoul in 2012.

"We believe that Gijang County will be a mecca for South Korean baseball," said Gijang County Governor Oh Gyu-seok. "We're ready to provide support to make the tournament successful."

South Korea has won the U-18 Baseball World Cup five times, with the most recent title coming from the 2008 edition. Cuba has the most titles at 11, followed by the United States at nine.

South Korea was the runner-up in the 2017 tournament in Canada after losing to the U.S.

"We will review our national team operations and support manuals so that we can win the title at home," said KBSA President Kim Euong-yong.
