S. Korean ministry reiterates no coercion in defection of N. Korean restaurant workers

SEOUL -- South Korea's unification ministry reiterated Monday its position that there was no coercion in the controversial group defection of North Korean restaurant workers from China in 2016.

The reaffirmation came a day after the National Human Rights Commission, the country's human rights watchdog, said it plans to look into allegations that some of the defectors were duped into coming to the South.

Two Koreas to hold general-grade military talks this week

SEOUL -- The two Koreas are set to hold general-grade military talks Tuesday to discuss measures to enforce the military part of their April summit agreement.

The meeting, the first one since June 14, will take place at the Peace House, a South Korea-controlled building at the truce village of Panmunjom inside the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating the two Koreas, at 10 a.m., according to Seoul officials.

(LEAD) S. Korean foreign minister to pitch for Korea peace at regional forums

SEOUL -- South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha will engage in a round of hectic bilateral and multilateral diplomacy in Singapore this week during a series of major forums on regional security and economic and cultural cooperation, her ministry said Monday.

Kang and her counterparts from more than two dozen countries, including North Korea, will huddle together at the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) on Saturday. ASEAN stands for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Moon's approval rating dips to second lowest

SEOUL -- President Moon Jae-in's approval rating continued to drop last week, falling to the second lowest level since his inauguration, a poll showed Monday.

In a survey conducted by Realmeter, Moon's approval rating came to 61.1 percent, down 1.8 percentage points from a week earlier. The weekly survey was conducted Monday through Friday on 2,504 adults throughout the nation.

Retail sales rise 7.4 pct in H1 on online sales

SEOUL -- Retail sales in South Korea rose 7.4 percent on-year in the first half, thanks to upbeat sales at online stores, data showed Monday.

Sales at online stores jumped 16.3 percent compared with the year before in the first half, while those at offline retailers rose 2.7 percent on-year during the January-June period, according to the data by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

CJ Logistics mulls further overseas investment

SEOUL -- CJ Logistics Corp., an affiliate of South Korean food and entertainment giant CJ, said Monday it is considering investing in overseas companies to expand its global presence.

"We are reviewing various partnerships, joint ventures and investment opportunities with foreign logistics firms in order to boost our business competitiveness and make a leap to become a global logistics company," it said in a regulatory filing, while adding that nothing has been decided in detail yet.

S. Korean banks' daily FX turnover hits all-time high in Q2

SEOUL -- The daily foreign exchange (FX) turnover by local and foreign banks in South Korea hit a record high in the second quarter of this year amid rising volatility of the local currency, central bank data showed Monday.

The daily FX turnover averaged US$57.65 billion from April to June, up 1 percent from the previous quarter's $57.1 billion, according to the Bank of Korea (BOK).

N. Korea registers to compete in shooting world championships in S. Korea

SEOUL -- North Korea has formally registered to compete in this year's shooting world championships in South Korea, the event's organizers said Monday.

North Korea will send 12 athletes and 10 officials to the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Shooting Championships in Changwon, 400 kilometers southeast of Seoul, from Aug. 31 to Sept. 15, according to the organizing committee. It said North Korea completed its registration last Thursday and will be represented in 14 events.
