(6th LD) Samsung Electronics' net profit down 0.09 pct in Q2

SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics Co. said Tuesday its second-quarter net profit edged down 0.09 percent on-year amid weak returns from the smartphone business, although the chip business posted another quarterly record profit.

Net profit came to 11.04 trillion won (US$9.8 billion) in the April-June period, compared with 11.05 trillion won posted a year earlier, Samsung said in its regulatory filing.

(LEAD) Koreas to conduct joint on-site inspection for forestry cooperation

SEOUL -- The two Koreas agreed Tuesday to conduct a joint inspection next month of the area for forestry cooperation, the unification ministry said.

North Korea made a proposal to conduct the on-site inspection on Aug. 8 for the project to fight damage from harmful insects. South Korea's unification ministry accepted the offer, according to the ministry.

S. Korea says it is closely watching developments on N.K. missile program

SEOUL -- South Korea is closely watching developments related to North Korea's missile program, Seoul's foreign ministry said Tuesday, following a report that the communist state appears to be building new intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM).

"The government is closely watching the related developments in close coordination between the South Korean and U.S. authorities," the ministry's deputy spokesman Kim Deuk-hwan said during a regular press briefing.

(LEAD) S. Korea's top diplomat heads to Singapore for key regional forum

SEOUL -- South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha left Tuesday for Singapore to join a series of bilateral and multilateral talks on North Korea and other regional issues.

Her weeklong trip will focus on Seoul's ties with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Korean peace process, which includes declaring a formal end to the 1950-53 Korean War.

World Cup star goalkeeper looking to outdo himself at Asian Games

PAJU -- As South Korea got eliminated in the group stage at the FIFA World Cup in Russia last month, goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo emerged as the most pleasant surprise.

The unheralded player with only six previously caps won the starting gig over veteran Kim Seung-gyu at the start and never lost the job. Jo was named the Man of the Match in South Korea's 2-0 shock win over Germany in the final Group F match.

Samsung to fund 50 bln won to support small biz smart factories

SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics Co. said Tuesday it will donate 50 billion won (US$44.7 million) to an industrial foundation to help small firms set up smart-factory infrastructure in their production centers.

The South Korean tech giant said through a regulatory filing that its board has decided to provide 10 billion won annually over the next five years for the project aimed at seeking shared growth with small and medium-sized firms.

(LEAD) Seoul stocks up marginally amid performance announcements

SEOUL -- South Korean stocks closed marginally higher Tuesday, with the market getting help as listed firms announced second-quarter reports and performance uncertainties eased, analysts said. The Korean won gained against the U.S. dollar.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index inched up 1.75 points, or 0.08 percent, to close at 2,295.26. Trade volume was very light at 205 million shares worth 4.29 trillion won (US$3.83 billion), with winners beating losers 444 to 386.

Physical, mental strength key to success at Asiad men's football: coach

PAJU -- Having the requisite physical strength and mental fortitude to battle through heat and humidity will be the key to South Korea's title defense at the Asian Games men's football, the team's coach said at the start of the training camp Tuesday.

South Korea will try to defend their crown at the Aug. 18-Sept. 2 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia. South Korea have won four Asian Games gold medals in men's football but have never won two in a row.
