Seoul stocks start higher on pharmaceuticals, steelmakers

SEOUL, Aug. 1 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks started higher Wednesday on the back of strong gains from pharmaceutical companies and steelmakers.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index added 11.21 points, or 0.49 percent, to 2,306.47 in the first 15 minutes of trading.

Pharmaceutical shares traded higher, with Celltrion jumping 3.68 percent and Samsung BioLogics moving up 2.01 percent.

No. 1 steelmaker POSCO moved up 2.72 percent, and Korea Zinc added 1.82 percent. Hyundai Steel advanced 2.42 percent.

The South Korean currency was trading at 1,117.10 won against the U.S. dollar, up 1.60 won from the previous session's close.
