Seoul stocks start lower on losses in tech, steel sector

SEOUL, Aug. 2 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks started slightly weaker Thursday due to losses from technology companies and steekmakers.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index fell 3.85 points, or 0.17 percent, to 2,303.22 in the first 15 minutes of trading.

Market giant Samsung Electronics fell 0.43 percent, and No. 2 chipmaker SK hynix moved down 0.82 percent.

No. 1 steelmaker POSCO decreased 1.35 percent, and Korea Zinc moved down 0.61 percent. Hyundai Steel lost 0.55 percent.

Pharmaceutical shares, in contrast, traded higher, with Samsung BioLogics moving up 0.13 percent and Hanmi Pharmaceutical increasing 1.65 percent.

The South Korean currency was trading at 1,119.45 won against the U.S. dollar, up 1.15 won from the previous session's close.
