S. Korean stocks open higher on U.S. gains

SEOUL, Aug. 8 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks opened higher Wednesday, tracking overnight gains on Wall Street.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) added 6.02 points, or 0.26 percent, to 2,306.18 in the first 15 minutes of trading.

Most large caps traded mixed, with market kingpin Samsung Electronics inching down 0.11 percent and global chipmaker SK hynix gaining 0.25 percent.

On Tuesday (local time), the U.S. markets posted strong gains, with the Dow Jones rising 0.5 percent. The broader S&P 500 added 0.28 percent, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq gained 0.31 percent.

The local currency was trading at 1,118.5 won against the U.S. dollar, up 5.3 won from the previous session's close.
