2 Koreas holding meeting to discuss railway cooperation

SEOUL -- South and North Korean officials are holding a meeting to discuss cooperation in modernizing and eventually reconnecting railways across their border, a unification ministry official said Thursday.

The meeting is currently under way between railway policymakers of the two Koreas at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) office in Paju, just south of the inter-Korean border, according to the official.

Moon's approval rating plunges to record low

SEOUL -- President Moon Jae-in's approval rating has plunged to a record low, a poll showed Thursday.

In a survey conducted Monday through Wednesday by Realmeter, Moon's approval rating came to 58.0 percent, down 5.2 percent from 63.2 percent tallied in a weekly, five-day survey conducted last week.

Samsung to start preorders for Galaxy Note 9 on Monday

SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics Co. plans to start receiving preorders for its Galaxy Note 9 in South Korea next week, industry sources said Thursday, in an apparent effort to increase its shipments.

According to the sources, South Korea's three mobile carriers will take orders Monday, which is a day earlier than expected. The move seems aimed at getting as many customers as possible before archrival Apple Inc. unveils its new iPhones next month, sources here said.

2 BMW models catch fire on highways

SACHEON/UIWANG, South Korea -- Two BMW vehicles running on separate regional highways caught fire Thursday, adding to a string of similar cases that has prompted a government probe and an apology by the local unit of the German automaker.

One of the vehicles, a BMW 730Ld model, was gutted after a fire broke out in its engine area on Namhae Highway in Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province, about 301 kilometers south of Seoul.

BTS to hold its first-ever stadium concert in U.S. in October

SEOUL -- K-pop boy group BTS will perform at a 40,000-seat stadium in New York City as part of their upcoming world tour, their management agency said Thursday.

The band will hit New York City's Citi Field on Oct. 6 on the American leg of their upcoming world tour, according to Big Hit Entertainment. They will become the first South Korean singers to hold a solo concert at an American stadium.

S. Korea OKs trip by young athletes to N. Korea for soccer event

SEOUL -- South Korea has approved a trip by a group of young athletes to North Korea to take part in an international youth soccer event to be held next week, the unification ministry said Thursday.

A total of 151 people, including athletes, journalists and other staff members, will leave for Pyongyang on Friday by using a western land route, according to a ministry official.

(2nd LD) Kakao Q2 net more than doubled

SEOUL -- Kakao Corp., the operator of South Korea's top mobile messenger KakaoTalk, said Thursday its second-quarter net profit more than doubled from a year earlier on increased gains from financial assets.

Net profit for the three months that ended on June 30 jumped to 25.4 billion won (US$22.7 million) from 12.5 billion won a year earlier, the company said in a regulatory filing.

Seoul has tropical night for 19th day in a row amid heat wave

SEOUL -- Seoul had a tropical night for the 19th consecutive day amid a heat wave as weather data showed the lowest temperature in the South Korean capital early Thursday morning was 27.6 C.

Tropical night is an expression used when the overnight low is 25 C or higher from 6:01 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. the next day.
