JAKARTA, Aug. 20 (Yonhap) -- North Korean weightlifter Ri Song-gum won her country's first gold at the 18th Asian Games on Monday.

Ri became the first North Korean gold medalist at the Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games after topping the women's 48kg weightlifting competition at Jakarta International Expo in Jakarta.

The 20-year-old cleared a total of 199kg and edged home crowd favorite Sri Wahyuni Agustiani of Indonesia who lifted a total of 195kg. Thunya Sukcharoen of Thailand took bronze with 189kg.

Ri's gold was the second medal won by North Koreans at this year's Asian Games. On Sunday, freestyle wrestler Kang Kum-song took silver in the men's 57kg division.

Ri cleared 87kg in the snatch, tying for the second with Sukcharoen. Ri attempted for 90kg in her third try in the snatch, but failed to clear it.

However, she easily moved up to first place after clearing 112kg in her first attempt in the clean and jerk. Agustiani had the second best result in the clean and jerk at 107kg.

Ri later tried to lift 117kg, but failed to do so in both of her attempts.
