SEOUL, Aug. 29 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's foreign ministry said Wednesday it will hold an annual meeting of the heads of diplomatic missions in ASEAN member states, South Asian countries and Pacific islands this week.

The session will take place in Bangkok on Friday, presided over by Deputy Minister for Political Affairs Yoon Soon-gu.

A total of 31 envoys, mostly ambassadors and consul generals, are scheduled to attend it.

ASEAN members, India, Australia and New Zealand are among the nations they cover.

The meeting comes amid Seoul's efforts to improve its strategic ties with the nations in the region under the New Southern Policy.

"The meeting this time will be held with the core theme of the New Southern Policy, on which our government is placing a top priority," the ministry said.

Yoon joined the 16th East Asia Forum held in Luang Prabang Province, Laos, earlier this week.

He paid a courtesy call on Lao Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith on Wednesday.

Yoon reaffirmed Seoul's plan to support the recovery and reconstruction of areas hit by last month's floods caused by a dam collapse, his ministry said.
