SEOUL, Sept. 5 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Motor Co. and its affiliate Kia Motors Corp. posted improved sales results in the United States last month driven by increased sales of sport utility vehicles, the companies said Wednesday.

In August, Hyundai Motor sold a total of 57,542 vehicles in the U.S., the world's most important automobile market. It was up a solid 6 percent from 54,310 units a year earlier, the company said in a statement.

Increased sales of the Tucson compact SUV and the Kona subcompact SUV gave a boost to the monthly results, it said.

"It's a great sign that Hyundai is regaining its sales momentum in the second half of the year, with SUV sales making up nearly 50 percent of volume and car models," Director John Angevine in charge of national sales at Hyundai Motor America said in the statement.

In the January-August period, Hyundai's sales fell 2.3 percent to 444,342 autos from 454,733 in the year-ago period. It has yet to recover from sharp sales declines last year due to a lack of new models amid growing demand for recreational vehicles.

Hyundai expects the all-new Santa Fe SUV, launched in the U.S. in June, will help boost its overall sales numbers this year. The new model is produced in Hyundai's Alabama plant.

Kia sold a total 53,864 units last month, up 1 percent from 53,323 a year ago and helped by robust sales of the Sorento and Sportage crossover models, the company said in a statement.

In the first eight months, Kia's sales also declined 1.2 percent to 400,539 from 405,462 a year earlier due to a lack of new models.

From January to August, Hyundai and Kia, which together form the world's fifth-biggest carmaker by sales, sold a combined 844,881 units, down 1.8 percent from 860,195 a year ago.

The two carmakers aim to sell a combined 7.55 million vehicles globally in 2018, slightly higher than the 7.25 million units they sold last year.
