Hyundai invests in Swiss augmented-reality firm WayRay

SEOUL, Sept. 19 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea's largest carmaker by sales, said Wednesday it has invested in WayRay, a Swiss company that aims to enable holographic augmented reality (AR) displays in cars.

In a strategic partnership, Hyundai Motor will work with WayRay to develop the navigation system based on the Swiss firm's holographic AR technologies, the company said in a statement.

The Korean carmaker aims to launch vehicles equipped with the WayRay's AR technologies-based navigation system in the global market after 2020. It will provide a "whole new value" to the driver, it said.

Hyundai didn't provide the amount of its investment.

WayRay, founded in 2012, has recently raised a US$80 million fund, with Hyundai Motor, Porsche and Chinese tech giant Alibaba being among the investors, according to foreign media reports.

The company wants to develop technology to project images onto car windshields. It could provide information about a vehicle's surroundings or video game-like features, such as creating a ghost pace car for drivers to chase on roads.
