Moon reiterates commitment to peace, reunification with N. Korea

SEOUL -- President Moon Jae-in on Friday reiterated his commitment to peace and eventual reunification with North Korea, saying he dreams of a country that overseas Koreans can visit overland by car and train.

Moon made the remark during a Korean Day ceremony before hundreds of representatives of overseas Koreans from around the world, stressing that the two Koreas are moving beyond national division and confrontation toward peace.

(LEAD) Military chief nominee says N. Korea still an enemy

SEOUL -- The nominee to become South Korea's top military officer made clear Friday that North Korea remains the country's enemy despite a conciliatory mood.

"Our existing enemy ... It's North Korea, which is a clear enemy that threatens the Republic of Korea," Army Gen. Park Han-ki, nominated to lead the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), said during his confirmation hearing at the National Assembly.

(LEAD) Koreas hold first joint event to celebrate 2007 summit anniversary

SEOUL/PYONGYANG -- South and North Korea held their first-ever joint event to celebrate the anniversary of a 2007 summit in Pyongyang on Friday amid a growing mood of rapprochement.

About 160 South Koreans, including government officials, politicians, civic, religious and cultural figures, took part in the event in the People's Palace of Culture in the North's capital to commemorate the 11th anniversary of the second inter-Korean summit on Oct. 4, 2007, which involved then-South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun and then-North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.

(2nd LD) S. Korea's consumer price growth hits 1-year high in September

SEJONG -- South Korea's consumer price growth continued to stay above 1 percent in September, hitting the highest level in a year, on a sharp rise in prices for agricultural goods and the service sector, government data showed Friday.

The country's consumer price index climbed 1.9 percent last month from a year earlier, accelerating from the previous month's 1.4 percent on-year gain, according to the data compiled by Statistics Korea.

(2nd LD) Samsung Electronics Q3 operating profit jumps 20.4 pct to hit record high

SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics Co. said Friday that its third-quarter operating profit moved up a sharp 20.4 percent on-year to hit a record high, apparently on the back of robust returns from its chip business.

Operating profit came to 17.5 trillion won (US$15.4 billion) in the July-September period, rising from 14.53 trillion won posted a year earlier, the South Korean tech giant said in a regulatory filing.

(3rd LD) U.S. imposes N.K.-related sanctions on Turkish firm, individuals

WASHINGTON -- The United States on Thursday imposed sanctions on a Turkish company and several individuals for their alleged violation of sanctions against North Korea.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury said it is targeting SIA Falcon International Group for attempting to trade in weapons and luxury goods with North Korea in breach of United Nations sanctions against Pyongyang.

Ex-police chief arrested over illicit cyber operations

SEOUL -- Former National Police Agency Commissioner-General Cho Hyun-oh was arrested early Friday on charges of masterminding cyber maneuvers to benefit a previous conservative government.

The Seoul Central District Court granted the warrant, acknowledging that his charges have been explained and that he may destroy evidence. Cho was arraigned on Thursday.
