SEJONG, Nov. 9 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's total supply in manufacturing plunged in the third quarter from a year earlier on a decline in both production at home and imports, government data showed Friday.

The manufacturing domestic supply index -- which measures both goods produced locally and brought into South Korea -- fell 5.1 percent on-year to stand at 101.2 during the July-September period, according to the data compiled by Statistics Korea.

The on-year fall is due to a decrease in domestic supply mainly stemming from shortened working days, and the supply from overseas.

The supply of South Korean-made goods dropped 6.0 percent in the third quarter from a year earlier, while that for imported products declined 2.6 percent on-year.

In 2016, the statistical office came up with the index to measure the total domestic supply of locally produced goods and imported products, with the base number for 2015 set at 100.

The index for consumer goods fell 2.9 percent in the third quarter from a year earlier, and the figure for intermediate goods fell 3.8 percent, with that of capital goods plunging 12.9 percent on-year, the data showed.

Asia's fourth-largest economy grew 0.6 percent on-quarter in the third quarter of the year, the same as the 0.6 percent gain tallied in the second quarter and down from a 1 percent expansion in the first, according to the advance estimate by the Bank of Korea (BOK).

From a year earlier, the country grew 2 percent over the three-month period, marking the slowest on-year growth since the third quarter of 2009.
