U.N. grants sanctions exemption to charity group for medical aid to N.K.

North Korea 15:36 November 30, 2018

SEOUL, Nov. 30 (Yonhap) -- The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) granted a sanctions exemption for a U.S. charity group to deliver medical aid to North Korea, the foundation said Friday.

The Eugene Bell Foundation said it received the notification from the chairman of a UNSC committee earlier in the day that its application for a humanitarian exemption, made in February, has been approved.

The foundation said all of the items related to its prefab tuberculosis isolation wards, manufactured by a Korean company, were approved.

"We are asking the Republic of Korea government to expedite the export permits required for the shipment and to help insure that we will encounter no difficulties in sending our shipment to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in time for our spring 2019 visit," the foundation said in a statement.

The foundation has long provided medical humanitarian assistance to North Korea, especially for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis.
