(2nd LD) S. Korean economy grows 0.6 pct on-quarter in Q3: BOK

SEOUL -- The South Korean economy expanded 0.6 percent in the third quarter from three months earlier, central bank data showed Tuesday, amid rising concerns over an economic downturn.

The July-September growth rate was the slowest since the fourth quarter of last year when the economy contracted 0.2 percent, according to the preliminary data by the Bank of Korea (BOK).

Moon says Kim's Seoul visit will accelerate denuclearization

AUCKLAND -- South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Tuesday highlighted the importance of a proposed visit by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to his country, saying it may help speed up the North's denuclearization process.

Moon said the proposed visit may also help ensure greater success in the second U.S.-North Korea summit, expected to be held early next year.

S. Koreans to return home Wed. following railway inspection of N. Korea's western line

SEOUL -- A group of South Korean officials and railway experts will return home this week after completing a joint inspection on the rail line along North Korea's western region, a unification ministry official said Tuesday.

A train left for the North on Friday with 28 South Koreans on board to inspect the Gyeongui western railway as part of its 18-day inspection of the rail system in the North.

(2nd LD) S. Korean satellite successfully reaches earth's orbit

SEOUL -- A small South Korean satellite designed to carry out space observation successfully reached its designated orbit after blasting off from an Air Force base in the United States, Seoul's science ministry said Tuesday.

The Next Sat-1, which lifted off from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at around 10:34 a.m. Monday (local time) aboard the Falcon 9, made contact with ground stations, the Ministry of Science and ICT said.

Prime minister urges parliament to handle gov't budget bill fast

SEOUL -- Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon called on parliament Tuesday to handle the government's 2019 budget bill as soon as possible as ordinary people are suffering from economic difficulties.

The government's record 470.5 trillion-won (US$423.6 billion) budget proposal is pending at the National Assembly with rival parties having yet to complete their budget review amid partisan wrangling.

(LEAD) Gyeonggi governor's wife grilled over slander allegations

SUWON -- The wife of Gyeonggi Province Gov. Lee Jae-myung underwent prosecution questioning for a third time Tuesday over allegations she posted slanderous messages about her husband's political rivals.

Kim Hye-kyung appeared at the Suwon District Prosecutors' Office at around 10:05 a.m. Tuesday's questioning follows an interrogation in late October and another in early November.

Badminton star embroiled in fake service records controversy

SEOUL -- South Korean badminton star Lee Yong-dae has been embroiled in a fake community service records controversy, although he has denied any wrongdoing.

Lee said Tuesday that he voluntarily reported errors in his community service records to the Military Manpower Administration (MMA) last Friday, but refuted allegations that he had intentionally doctored the documents.
