SEOUL, Dec. 3 (Yonhap) -- KT Corp., South Korea's leading fixed-line services provider, is aiming to become a top player in the world's fifth-generation (5G) service sector, its CEO said Monday.

"KT is committed to reforming itself to lead the fourth industrial revolution and be a smart platform provider in light of the 5G commercialization era," Hwang Chang-gyu said in an email message to all employees.

KT -- along with two other local carriers, SK Telecom Co. and LG Uplus Inc. -- began to offer live commercial 5G services as of midnight Saturday, in parts of Seoul and the area surrounding the capital.

KT said its first commercial 5G customer was a robot named Rota, with the 5G service for individual customers to kick off next March.

"The fact a robot was selected as the first subscriber of 5G is a sign that KT aims to provide a new kind of value by infusing the latest technology, such artificial intelligence, big data and the Internet of Things," Hwang said.
