(2nd LD) S. Korea's indigenous weather satellite successfully launched

SEOUL -- South Korea's first indigenous geostationary weather satellite, the Chollian-2A, intended to enhance the country's weather monitoring system, successfully made initial contact with a ground station after blasting off from a space center in French Guiana, the government in Seoul said Wednesday.

The multipurpose satellite, also known as GEO-KOMPSAT-2A, lifted off aboard a launch vehicle made by Arianespace from the Guiana Space Center at Kourou at 5:37 a.m., according to the Ministry of Science and ICT.

Pompeo: N.K. sanctions campaign shows U.S. leadership

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Tuesday that the international sanctions campaign against North Korea is an example of U.S. leadership in the world.

Speaking in Brussels, the top U.S. diplomat rejected criticism that the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is undermining the world order by withdrawing from international organizations and pacts, including the nuclear deal with Iran.

U.N. says over US$111 mln required for humanitarian aid to N.K. next year

SEOUL -- More than US$111 million will be needed for humanitarian assistance to North Korea next year amid international sanctions on the impoverished country, a U.N. report showed Wednesday.

The amount is similar to this year's level targeted for 6 million people, according to the Global Humanitarian Overview 2019 released by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

S. Korean football clubs to receive more than US$3 mln compensation for 2018 World Cup

SEOUL -- South Korean football clubs will receive more than US$3 million from FIFA for releasing their players for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, with the reigning K League 1 champions set to get nearly US$700,000, data from the world football governing body showed Wednesday.

FIFA confirmed that US$209 million will be allocated to 416 clubs from 63 member associations that sent their players to the 2018 World Cup under its Club Benefits Program. The data showed a total of US$ 3,069,135 will be paid out to 10 South Korean clubs.

Cold wave hits S. Korea with mercury plunging to this year's lowest levels

SEJONG -- A cold air mass gripped South Korea on Wednesday morning, with many regions experiencing season-low temperatures, as the weather agency issued warnings against cold weather in most areas.

Among the locations, the mercury fell to record lows for the year so far of minus 4 C in Seoul, minus 6.9 C in Paju and minus 4.6 C in Dongducheon, both north of Seoul, minus 3.4 C in Incheon, west of Seoul, and minus 2.9 C in Suwon, south of Seoul.

BTS ranked 8th on Billboard's Top Artists of 2018

SEOUL -- South Korean boy group BTS was 8th in the Top Artists category of the U.S. Billboard's 2018 year-end charts.

According to the charts released on Tuesday (U.S. local time), BTS was with Drake, Post Malone, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Cardi B, XXXTentacion, and Imagine Dragons on the Top Artists list.

Moon orders measures to strengthen presidential officials' discipline

SEOUL -- President Moon Jae-in has ordered a senior aide to draw up measures to strengthen presidential officials' discipline following allegations of irregularities against some officials, his spokesman said Wednesday.

Moon on Tuesday instructed Cho Kuk, senior presidential secretary for civil affairs, to immediately come up with measures to improve the operation of a team of special inspectors that has recently come under fire for its members' alleged wrongdoings.

Koreas in consultation to fix schedule for road inspection across border

SEOUL -- South and North Korea are in consultation to determine when and how they will conduct a joint inspection of roads of the two Koreas to modernize and reconnect them across their border, the unification ministry said Wednesday.

In August, the two Koreas conducted an eight-day joint field inspection of a road in the western region running from Kaesong, a town in North Korea near the border, to Pyongyang.
