(LEAD) Seoul shares close higher amid ongoing U.S.-China trade talks

SEOUL -- South Korean stocks ended higher Friday as investors remained cautious about the ongoing U.S.-China trade deal. The won rose against the dollar.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index trimmed earlier gains to end 7.07 points, or 0.34 percent, higher than the previous session at 2,075.76. Trading volume was moderate at 363 million shares worth 4.22 trillion won (US$3.8 billion), with gainers outnumbering losers 453 to 359.

Ranking Army officer under probe jumps to death: police

SEOUL -- A ranking Army officer under a prosecution investigation on illegal surveillance charges jumped off a building in an apparent suicide, police said Friday.

Lt. Gen. Lee Jae-su appears to have thrown himself off a building located in the eastern district of Songpa at around 2:48 p.m., police said.

S. Korea, U.S. to hold defense cost talks next week

SEOUL, Dec. 7 (Yonhap) -- South Korea and the United States will try to reach a deal on splitting defense costs in another round of Special Measures Agreement (SMA) talks in Seoul next week.

The 10th round of negotiations will be held Tuesday through Thursday, as the allies are running out of time for a deal, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Moon promotes making donations at event

SEOUL -- President Moon Jae-in sought to promote the practice of making donations Friday, calling it a civilian-led effort to look out for those who may have been neglected by the government.

In a meeting with officials and honorary ambassadors from 15 major donation campaigns, the president said the country may be one of the better-off nations in the world but that not all may have immediate access to the benefits of its success.

Jeonbuk sign 2-year contract with new head coach Jose Morais

SEOUL, Dec. 7 (Yonhap) -- South Korean club football champions Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors confirmed Friday they've signed a contract with Jose Morais of Portugal as their new head coach.

The K League 1 champions said Morais visited Jeonbuk's office on Monday and inked a two-year deal that will keep him at the club until the end of 2020.

S Korean Cha Jun-hwan 4th after short program at Grand Prix Final

SEOUL -- South Korean Cha Jun-hwan has posted the second-highest score of his career in the men's short program at the International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final, putting himself within striking distance of a podium finish.

Cha earned 89.07 points to rank fourth among six skaters at the Grand Prix Final in Vancouver on Thursday (local time), with 47.35 points in technical element score and 41.72 points in program component score. Cha's career high in the short program is 90.56 points, set in September this year at a lower-tier ISU Challenger Series event.
