SEOUL, Dec. 11 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks traded nearly unchanged late Tuesday morning as key blue chips had mixed fortunes amid a lack of market-moving factors.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index lost 0.21 point, or 0.01 percent, to 2,053.58 as of 11:20 a.m.

After opening a tad higher, the index fluctuated between positive and negative terrain.

Retail and foreign investors were on a buying mode, offsetting institutional selling.

Big-cap shares traded mixed.

Market bellwether Samsung Electronics inched up 0.12 percent, while major chipmaker SK hynix decreased 0.46 percent.

LG Chem advanced 1.16 percent, but top steelmaker POSCO retreated 1.21 percent.

Major bio shares were also mixed. Pharmaceutical giant Celltrion tumbled 5.52 percent, while Samsung BioLogics spiked 18.83 percent on the first day of trading after an 18-day suspension.

The South Korean currency was trading at 1,128.90 won against the U.S. dollar, down 2.4 won from the previous session's close.
