Seoul shares down 0.87 pct in late morning trade

SEOUL, Jan. 2 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks traded 0.87 percent lower late Wednesday morning, dragged down by big-name shares.

On the first day of trading in 2019, the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) lost 17.78 points to 2,023.26 as of 11:20 a.m.

Oil refiners traded bearish amid falling oil prices, with industry leader SK Innovation slumping 5.57 percent and S-Oil sinking 4.91 percent.

Top carmaker Hyundai Motor fell 2.11 percent, and its auto parts affiliate Hyundai Mobis retreated 1.84 percent.

The local currency was changing hands at 1,119.50 won against the U.S. dollar, down 3.80 won from the previous session's close.
