Seoul shares open flat amid poor U.S. data

SEOUL, Jan. 4 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks started nearly flat on Friday despite a sharp drop on Wall Street.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) edged down 0.20 point, or 0.01 percent, to 1,993.50 in the first 15 minutes of trading.

Market bellwether Samsung Electronics fell 0.4 percent, while major chipmaker SK hynix didn't move.

Leading oil refiner SK Innovation gained 0.9 percent and S-Oil rose 0.55 percent.

The local currency was changing hands at 1,126.50 won against the U.S. dollar, up 1.20 won from the previous session's close.
