Seoul shares down 0.14 pct in late morning trade

SEOUL, Jan. 4 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks traded 0.14 percent lower late Friday morning as investors sought safer assets amid widespread economic slowdown concerns.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Prices Index (KOSPI) shed 2.7 points to 1,991.0 as of 11:20 a.m.

Chipmakers were the biggest losers, with industry leader Samsung Electronics falling 1.86 percent and SK hynix skidding 0.87 percent.

Top cosmetics firm AmorePacific tumbled 6.43 percent, and LG Household & Health Care sank 2.47 percent.

But No. 1 carmaker Hyundai Motor jumped 4.29 percent, and its sister Kia Motors vaulted 5.48 percent.

The Korean won traded at 1,125.8 won against the U.S. dollar, up 1.9 won from the previous session's close.
