SEOUL, Jan. 8 (Yonhap) -- A total of 39 listed South Korean companies changed the face value of their shares last year, data showed Tuesday.

According to the Korea Securities Depository (KSD), 15 companies listed on the main KOSPI and 24 on the tech-laden KOSDAQ bourses opted for the change in 2018, down from last year's 44.

Among them is tech giant Samsung Electronics Co., which lowered its face value from 5,000 won (US$4.46) to 100 won in May 2018.

Of the 39 firms, 30 opted for a stock split to boost turnover and attract more investors, while nine increased their face value mainly to boost corporate images, the KSD said.
