SEOUL, Jan. 13 (Yonhap) -- North Korea has joined the International Federation for Equestrian Sports, its state media said in a belated report Sunday.

The general assembly of the IFE, based in Lausanne, Switzerland, unanimously approved the vote in November last year to accept Pyongyang as an affiliated member of the international governing body for equestrian sports, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said.

North Korea's joining of the IFE makes it eligible to participate in IFE-hosted international equestrian sports tournaments starting this year.

North Korea has been making efforts to boost competence in equestrian sports, establishing a national equestrian club in 2013 and ramping up athletes' training.
