SEOUL, Jan. 23 (Yonhap) -- A Japanese maritime patrol plane flew close to a South Korean warship Wednesday, Seoul's military said, a move likely to deepen tensions amid a lingering military radar dispute.

"Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo, along with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is working on this issue at this point," a Seoul official told reporters on condition of anonymity.

Earlier this week, Tokyo announced a halt to bilateral consultations on the dispute over a South Korean destroyer's radar operation.
