SEOUL, Feb. 1 (Yonhap) -- GM Korea Co., the South Korean unit of General Motors Co., said Friday its sales fell 8.7 percent last month from a year earlier due to weak demand for its models.

GM Korea sold 38,705 vehicles in January, down from 42,401 units a year earlier, the company said in a statement.

Domestic sales plunged 36 percent to 5,053 units last month from 7,844 a year ago. Exports declined 2.6 percent to 33,652 from 34,557 during the same period, it said.

To boost sales, the carmaker plans to introduce 15 vehicles into the local market over the next five years. It launched the U.S.-made Equinox SUV and the upgraded Chevy Spark minicar last year. The Traverse SUV will be the next model to be added to its lineup.
