S. Korea, U.S. nearing deal on defense cost sharing: lawmaker

SEOUL -- South Korea and the United States may conclude their drawn-out negotiations on defense cost sharing as early as Thursday, a ruling party lawmaker said, adding Seoul's share will likely be set at around 1 trillion won (US$889 million).

"The defense cost sharing negotiations have entered their final stage," Rep. Lee Soo-hyuck of the ruling Democratic Party told reporters.

Pompeo sees 'every opportunity' for N.K. denuclearization

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday that there is "every opportunity" that North Korea will dismantle its nuclear weapons program as promised.

In an interview with Fox Business, Pompeo said the U.S. is going into a second summit with North Korea late this month with hope that the regime will fulfill its denuclearization pledge.

S. Korea to spend 13 tln won by 2030 to stimulate development of border areas

SEOUL -- South Korea plans to spend over 13 trillion won (US$11.6 billion) over the next decade to expand infrastructure areas that border North Korea, including the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), for closer inter-Korean exchanges, the government said Thursday.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety said the government's Border Area Policy Deliberation Committee has approved a plan to invest 13.2 trillion won by 2030 to stimulate tourism and balanced growth of the border areas, whose development has been stalled due to military security and regulations.

Gov't to ease rule on recharging credit at mobile payment platforms

SEOUL -- The government plans to ease a rule on recharging credit at mobile payment platforms as it seeks to promote the financial technology sector, an official said Thursday.

Currently, people in South Korea can recharge up to 2 million won (US$1,782) at a mobile payment platform, such as Kakao Pay or Naver Pay, meaning they are unable to buy goods worth more than 2 million won through the one-click payment system.

S. Korea to celebrate 1st anniversary of PyeongChang Olympics with various events

SEOUL -- South Korea will celebrate the first anniversary of the PyeongChang Winter Games with various events as local organizers on Thursday vowed to carry on the Olympic legacy.

The 2018 Winter Olympics were held from Feb. 9 to 25 in PyeongChang, a resort town located 180 kilometers east of Seoul in Gangwon Province, as well as in the adjacent towns of Gangneung and Jeongseon. They hosted nearly 3,000 athletes from 92 nations, who competed for a record 102 gold medals.

BLACKPINK to appear on CBS talk show hosted by comedian Stephen Colbert

SEOUL -- K-pop girl band BLACKPINK will take the stage on a late-night talk show hosted by U.S. comedian Stephen Colbert next week, the U.S. broadcaster CBS has said.

CBS said Wednesday that the four-piece group is scheduled to perform at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York and chat with Colbert on Monday.
