Hyundai Steel develops anti-heat, anti-quake H-beam

All News 15:00 February 20, 2019

SEOUL, Feb. 20 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Steel said Wednesday that it has successfully developed an H-beam that is highly resistant to both heat and earthquakes.

The new product can withstand 36 kg of weight per 1 square millimeter and has a yield strength of at least 67 percent at 600 degrees C, according to the company. Other H-beams have a yield strength of under 30 percent at 350 degrees C, it said.

Hyundai Steel has been developing high-resistance steel from 2016 as one of the projects in a state-endorsed program to find new industrial materials. Full-fledged development is due in 2020.

H-beams are a key product for the steelmaker, which was the first in the country in 2005 to develop an anti-quake version.
