Moon's job approval rating dips to new low: poll

All News 08:31 March 18, 2019

SEOUL, March 18 (Yonhap) -- President Moon Jae-in's job approval rating dropped to a record low last week, a poll showed Monday, apparently on the recent collapse of negotiations between the United States and North Korea on ending the North's nuclear ambitions.

In the survey conducted by Realmeter, 44.9 percent of those surveyed said they approved of Moon's job as president, down 1.4 percentage points from a week earlier.

The reading marked the lowest since Moon took office in May 2017. The latest survey was conducted Monday through Friday on 2,517 adults throughout the nation.

The local pollster partly contributed the drop to the reports of the possible resumption of nuclear and missile activities by North Korea.

"The possible work to repair North Korea's missile launch site following the breakdown of the second North Korea-U.S. summit and the North's announcement of a possible end to the denuclearization negotiations appear to have most affected (the president's) job approval rating," it said.

U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un held their second summit in Hanoi late last month, but the meeting ended without a much-anticipated deal.

On Friday, the North's Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui said Pyongyang may reconsider its denuclearization talks with Washington, hinting at a possible halt.

Moon has yet to offer any personal comments on the issue, but his office Cheong Wa Dae insists both the U.S. and North Korea still remain committed to dialogue.

The North Korean nuclear issue has apparently affect the ruling party's job approval rating as well.

The ruling Democratic Party's rating came to 36.6 percent. The reading marks a 0.6 percentage-point drop from a week earlier and the lowest in 11 weeks.

The main opposition Liberty Korea Party's rating, on the other hand, increased 1.3 percentage points to 31.7 percent, marking a fourth consecutive week of rise. The reading also marks the highest in 29 months.

The approval rating of the progressive Justice Party slipped 0.1 percentage point to 6.9 percent with that of the minor opposition Bareunmirae Party dipping 0.3 point to 5.9 percent.

The rating of the liberal Party for Democracy and Peace remained unchanged at 2.1 percent.
