Key developments leading to S. Korea's 5G commercialization

SEOUL, April 4 (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronology of major developments leading up to the world's first commercial launch of 5G communication in South Korea.

Dec. 28, 2017 -- The Ministry of Science and ICT draws up a road map for the commercialization of 5G technology.

Jan. 31, 2018 -- The Ministry of Science and ICT submits candidate technology for 5G to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

Feb. 1, 2018 - March 17, 2018 -- Local 5G technology was demonstrated by local firms at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics and the PyeongChang Winter Paralympics.

June. 18, 2018 -- The Ministry of Science and ICT completes an auction for 5G network frequencies by the country's three mobile carriers.

Aug. 16, 2018 -- The Ministry of Science and ICT revises a technology standard for 5G base stations, smartphones and repeaters.

Dec. 1, 2018 -- The three mobile carriers begin to offer live commercial 5G services for business clients.

March 29, 2019 -- The Ministry of Science and ICT accepted the nation's top mobile carrier SK Telecom Co.'s plan for its pricing package for the 5G network. Two other carriers -- KT Corp. and LG Uplus Inc. -- also submit service plans.

April 3, 2019 -- The three mobile carriers -- SK Telecom Co., KT Corp. and LG Uplus Inc. -- kicked off full-fledged 5G mobile service.

April 4, 2019 -- The Ministry of Science and ICT officially announces the world's first 5G commercialization.

April 5, 2019 -- Samsung Electronics Inc. to launch Galaxy S10 5G smartphone.

April 8, 2019 -- The government and the mobile carriers to hold event to mark world's first full-fledged 5G service.
