Unification minister to meet Russian ambassador next week: official

North Korea 14:18 April 18, 2019

SEOUL, April 18 (Yonhap) -- Unification Minister Kim Yeon-chul will likely meet with Russian Ambassador to South Korea Andrey Kulik next week, a ministry official said Thursday.

It will be part of a series of meetings that Kim has been holding with foreign ambassadors since taking office as Seoul's point man on North Korea last week. Earlier this week, he met with the ambassadors of the United States, China and Japan.

A meeting with the Russian envoy is likely to take place sometime next week, the ministry official said.

It comes amid reports that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will likely travel to the city of Vladivostok, in the Russian Far East, for his first-ever summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Their summit is highly expected to take place on and around next Wednesday.

A Japanese television network, Fuji News Network, recently broadcast footage of a man presumed to be Kim Chang-son, the North Korean leader's de facto chief of staff, inspecting an area around a train station in Vladivostok, raising the possibility that the summit could be held in the Russian city near the border with North Korea.
