Hyundai, Kia suffer extended slump in China market in Q1
SEOUL, April 19 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Motor Co. and its affiliate Kia Motors Corp. said Friday their combined first-quarter sales in China continued to fall on low demand for their models.
Hyundai and Kia sold 213,057 vehicles in China during the January-March period. It was down from 244,818 and 273,351 units in the same quarters of 2018 and 2017, respectively, their sales data showed.
The carmakers have been struggling with weak sales in China since 2017, when a diplomatic row between Seoul and Beijing over the deployment of an advanced U.S. anti-missile system called THAAD in South Korea affected Korean-made car sales in the world's biggest automobile market.
Hyundai and Kia together form the world's fifth-biggest carmaker by sales.
