N. Korean media reports Kim's arrival in Vladivostok for summit with Putin

North Korea 07:29 April 25, 2019

SEOUL, April 25 (Yonhap) -- North Korean state media carried reports Thursday on leader Kim Jong-un's arrival the previous day in Russia for his first summit with President Vladimir Putin.

Kim arrived by train in Russia's Far East city of Vladivostok on Wednesday. He is expected to hold his first summit with Putin on Thursday.

"At 18:00 local time, a private train with Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un aboard pulled in at the railway station," the Korean Central News Agency said. "There was a ceremony for welcoming the visit to the Russian Federation by Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un."

The KCNA said that Kim was greeted by senior Russian officials, including Minister of Development of the Far East and Arctic of Russia Alexandr Kozlov and Vice Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov.

It, however, did not report on Kim's remarks nor did it provide details such as when his summit with Putin will be held and what agenda items they will discuss.

The Kremlin has confirmed that the summit will occur in Vladivostok on Thursday and that the main summit agenda item will be how to resolve the North Korean nuclear standoff.

Kim's trip to Vladivostok marks his first foreign travel since his second summit with U.S. President Donald Trump in Hanoi in February fell apart due to a failure to bridge differences over the scope of Pyongyang's nuclear disarmament and Washington's sanctions relief.

North Korea has been stepping up diplomacy with China and Russia since the no-deal summit apparently aimed at enlisting their support ahead of its future nuclear talks with the U.S.

The upcoming Kim-Putin summit will be the first meeting between the leaders of the two countries in eight years, after Kim's late father, former leader Kim Jong-il, met then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in 2011.
