S. Korea to announce final U-20 World Cup roster on May 2

SEOUL, April 26 (Yonhap) -- South Korea will announce their final roster for the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup next Thursday.

The Korea Football Association (KFA) said Friday that head coach Chung Jung-yong will unveil his 21-man roster the day after a practice match against the K League 1 club Suwon Samsung Bluewings.

This year's U-20 World Cup will take place in Poland from May 23 to June 15. South Korea have been paired with Portugal, Argentina and South Africa in Group F.

Chung opened training camp with 23 players this week at the National Football Center (NFC) in Paju, north of Seoul in Gyeonggi Province. But there are three Europe-based players that aren't currently at the NFC but are still expected to make the final roster: Bayern Munich forward Jeong Woo-yeong, FC Liefering midfielder Kim Jung-min and Dinamo Zagreb defender Kim Hyun-woo.

Valencia CF midfielder Lee Kang-in and Hamburg SV goalkeeper Choi Min-su have been working out at the NFC with the rest of the national team hopefuls.

The South Korean players are scheduled to depart for Poland on May 5. they will play two other U-20 World Cup contestants, New Zealand and Ecuador, in tuneup matches in Poland, before opening the group stage against Portugal on May 25.

They will next face South Africa on May 28, followed by Argentina three days later.

There are six groups of four, and the top two teams from each group, plus four best third-place teams, will advance to the round of 16.

This is the 22nd edition of FIFA's signature youth tournament. South Korea's best performance came in 1983 in Mexico, where they placed fourth.

South Korea hosted the most recent U-20 World Cup in 2017 and got knocked out of the round of 16.
