SKT to create 5G-based HD map for autonomous driving in Songdo
By Kim Eun-jung
SEOUL, April 29 (Yonhap) -- SK Telecom Co. said Monday it will create a high-definition (HD) map based on its 5G network for autonomous driving in Songdo.
The country's leading mobile carrier signed a memorandum of understanding with the Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ) to collaborate on the 5G-based HD map in an area spanning 132.9 square kilometers in Songdo, an international business district in the western port city of Incheon.
HD maps enable vehicles to see beyond the driver's field of view, providing an accurate representation of the road ahead and information on the surrounding environment. Though not limited to use only within self-driving cars, this technology is considered an essential feature for autonomous vehicles.
Under the agreement, SK Telecom said it will build 5G infrastructure by October and complete the HD map project by the end of the year.
SK Telecom and IFEZ will also establish a data hub to analyze pedestrian traffic in the free economic zone to enhance the transportation system in the region, the firm said.
