Hyundai i30 crosses 1-million sales mark in Europe
SEOUL, May 12 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Motor Co. said Sunday sales of its i30 hatchback surpassed a cumulative 1 million units in the European market since its launch in 2007.
The South Korean auto giant said more than 1 million compact cars were sold in 28 European Union countries and four members of the European Free Trade Association as of the end of the first quarter.
The number is noteworthy since the market for compact cars is extremely competitive on the continent amid established leaders like German automaker Volkswagen's Golf.
Hyundai Motor began the mass production of the i30 at its plant in the Czech Republic to meet the growing demand for smaller cars. Mass production began about one year after construction of the factory was completed in September 2009.
The company also said a cumulative 11,113 units of its high-performance i30N model have been sold in Europe since its launch in 2017.
