In Sancheong Village located near Jisi Mountain, work to dry radish greens is well underway.
Enjoyed as a winter delicacy, dried radish greens are rich in vitamins and minerals, and are thus a popular health food.
Park Jung-heon has more.
At a green field of radishes, farmers are pulling out the vegetables and cutting off the green parts.
Despite the biting cold, their faces are sweaty and hands are busy.
These radishes were planted to produce dried radish greens.
The greens that farmers harvested like this are taken to a drying house to be dried.
Dried radish greens produced like this then become a winter delicacy rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber.
<Kim Hong-dae / Farmer> “The wind that blows on Jiri Mountain freezes and dries the greens. So I think they become excellent natural food.”
The eighty farms in this village produce about seventy tons of dried radish greens each year.
Priced at 40,000 won per kg, they are sold to various places around the country as soon as they are produced.
Cooked into either a soup or seasoned greens, they make the entire family empty their bowl of rice in no time.
<Lim Hwa-ja / Farmer> “The dried radish greens from Sancheong are good for treating anemia and hangovers. For a winter food, they tend to be very savory and soft.”
These special dried radish greens from Jiri Mountain are surely a great help for the farmers’ income.
