Many people read webtoons online.

Webtoons are becoming a popular trend in Busan recently, as a Busan-based webtoon company was launched and business information sessions on the webtoon platform were held.

Kim Jae-hong has more.

Kim Tae-heon is the author of the mystery webtoon "Deep," a story about a family that went missing long ago.

Deep is planned to be made into a movie this July.

At the Busan Contents Korea Lab, webtoon authors like Mr. Kim are working alongside businessmen in the industry.

<Kim Tae-heon / Webtoon Author> “There is a unique atmosphere that this tourist city has. That is why we draw cartoons and webtoons here in Busan.”

The city office of Busan is planning to foster the webtoon industry as a global industry.

This is because a webtoon can lead to the publication of secondary content like drama, movies and games, and thus have enormous ripple effects.

With such support from the city, relevant companies are moving to Busan.

<Lee Hyung-geun / CEO of Bucon E&M> “As our collaboration with many authors increased, we had a reason to come down to Busan. So we decided to move our headquarters to Busan.”

This October, a global webtoon center will open for which more than eighty webtoon authors will move to Busan and continue their work.

<Seo Tae-gun / President of Busan IT Industry Promotion Agency> “We plan to support superior webtoon authors and provide marketing support to sell the content overseas.”

It is worth watching whether webtoons, moving out of the comic book store and into the online sphere, will become the new growth engine for the region.
