Most of you will likely carry or mail gifts to the people around you for the holidays.
This is rather bothersome in many ways.
So, recently, more people are using their phones to give gifts more conveniently.
Noh Eun-ji has more.
This is a mobile gift card, which you can give and receive anytime anywhere as long as you know each other’s phone numbers.
Thanks to the convenience, it has become a popular holiday gift.
During last year’s Chuseok week, the sales of Kakao’s mobile gift cards, which were No. 1 in the industry, increased by about 300 percent compared with the previous week.
Many distributors, like large supermarkets and department stores, have begun similar marketing.
One supermarket has launched for the first time mobile gift cards that you can use to send about 200 types of gift sets, including Korean beef and fruits.
<Hwang Su-jin / Seongdong-gu, Seoul> “It was really inconvenient to wait for parcels to arrive and put the gifts in the refrigerator straight away, lest they went bad. Mobile gift cards can be exchanged for gifts any time I need them.”
<Yoo Ye-nah / Section Chief of Mobile Team at E-Mart> “Because you can exchange gifts even on Chuseok Day, when all the holiday deliveries have ended, it is more convenient for both the givers and receivers.”
One department store, which began mobile gift card services last July, is enjoying increased demand for the holidays.
<Jeong Byeong-joo / Deputy Section Chief of Public Relations Team at Lotte Department> “You do not have to visit the department store when buying the gift cards, and when you use them, the gift cards are saved on your phones. So more people are buying them.”
The popularity of mobile gift cards, whose sales exceeded 500 billion won and is growing rapidly, is changing the traditional holiday conventions.
