The face-to-face questioning of President Park Geun-hye by the independent counsel, expected to take place as early as today (9th) at the Wimin Hall of the Blue House, was canceled.

The Blue House expressed strong regret of the leakage of the date of the questioning. In an unprecedented move, the counsel kept its silence.

President Park Geun-hye’s side announced that a face-to-face questioning on the 9th would not take place.

They cited the leakage of the questioning date through the media as their reason. The independent counsel's response to this was unprecedented silence.

<Lee Gyu-cheol / Spokesperson for Special Prosecutors> “At this stage, the counsel cannot confirm anything about the questioning of the president.”

Prior to this, a Blue House official stated that the independent counsel’s manipulation of the media has hurt their trust, and even broached the possibility of nullifying everything they have talked about so far.

Their position is that the counsel broke the promise of keeping everything secret until completely negotiated. An official from the counsel denied this as groundless, saying the media reports did not come from the prosecutors' office.

Some are questioning whether an investigation of the president by the independent counsel will also become impossible, after the former attempts by prosecutors to question her and the counsel's attempt to raid the Blue House all failed.

However, in an interview with an online media presence, President Park stated that “I plan on appearing for the counsel’s investigation,” and negotiations are still going on between the counsel and the president’s side. Therefore, it is expected that the issue of the presidential questioning will soon reach a conclusion.

Facing the first investigation of an incumbent president for the first time in Korea’s constitutional history, heated tension remains between Park Young-soo’s special prosecution team and the Blue House.
