Drones Deployed For Catching Goats

Nobody lives in Haesang National Park, but many of the islands have seen their environment being destroyed.

The destruction is attributable to the goats that some of the local residents have let free.

Drones are now playing a key role in protecting the ecosystems of the uninhabited islands.

Kim Jun-eok has more.

The thermal camera, connected to a smartphone, finds where the goats are.

Workers from the Korea National Park Service confirm the location of the goats, and begin their mission to capture them alive.

They corner them onto a cliff, close in on them, and successfully capture them alive.

The Drone Maritime Patrol by the Korean National Park Service has captured about 35 goats on three uninhabited islands at Haesang National Park.

The goats live on these islands because of the local residents who set them free there indiscriminately in the 1970s and 1980s.

The goats, grazed for additional income, are harming the ecosystems on the islands, eating the native plants, tree bark, and even roots.

Goats are one of the 100 invasive foreign species designated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Since 2007, the Korea National Park Service has captured about 2,840 goats on the islands at Haesang National Park, and also plans to capture 80 more by the end of this year.

'섬 생태계 파괴자' 염소…드론으로 생포작전 펼친다

해상국립공원에는 사람이 살지 않지만 생태계가 파괴된 섬도 적지 않습니다.

인근 주민들이 풀어 놓은 염소 때문인데요.

무인도의 생태계를 지키는 데 드론이 한 몫하고 있습니다.

김준억 기자입니다.

다도해 해상 국립공원인 전남 진도군 족도에 드론이 떴습니다.

스마트폰과 연결된 열화상카메라는 염소가 있는 곳을 찾아 냅니다.

염소 위치를 확인한 국립공원관리공단 직원들이 생포작전에 나섭니다.

낭떠러지로 몰아 세우고, 포위망을 좁혀 산 채로 잡는 데 성공합니다.

국립공원관리공단 '드론 해양순찰단'이 지난달 해상국립공원 무인도 3곳에서 잡은 염소는 35마리에 이릅니다.

무인도에 염소들이 사는 건 1970~80년대 지역 주민들이 무분별하게 풀어 놨기 때문입니다.

소득 증대를 목적으로 방목했던 염소들이 섬에서 자생하는 풀과 나무껍질은 물론 뿌리까지 먹어치워 섬 생태계를 훼손시키고 있습니다.

염소는 세계자연보전연맹(IUCN)이 지정한 100대 악성 외래종 가운데 하나입니다.

국립공원관리공단은 2007년부터 지난해까지 해상국립공원 일대 섬에 있는 염소 2천840마리를 포획했으며, 올해 말까지 추가로 80마리를 생포할 계획입니다.
