Pyeongchang Olympics Communication Network
A scandalous incident between mobile communication companies occurred with the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics only two months away.
SK Telecom was sued for damaging the KT communication network which was to be used for the Pyeongchang Olympics next year.
SK Telecom explained that it was a simple mistake but KT is claiming that it was clearly intentional.
Han Ji-yi has more.
This is the conduit for KT communication facilities located about 42 meters away from the International Broadcast Center in Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province.
KT built a communication network spreading over a total of 333 kilometers here for the past two years since September 2015.
These high-speed cables were to be used for delivering video feeds of competitions from the 12 arenas where the Olympics will be held to the International Broadcast Center as well as for communications within the Olympics work network.
But SK Telecom cut one of the internal pipes on the left belonging to KT to install its own six-kilometer-long high-speed cables.
SK Telecom explained that it was just a simple mistake made by a worker.
SK Telecom explained, "The internal pipe was empty at the time of cable work and we received verbal permission from the Olympics Organizing Committee to install this cable," adding, "We are currently restoring it to its original state."
The Olympics Organizing Committee refuted the claim of permitting SK Telecom to use this pipeline.
KT deemed that it was clearly intentional interference and sued SK Telecom and its partner companies through the Yeongwol Office of Chuncheon District Prosecutors' Office for interference of business and property damage on the 24th of last month.
"Using such a facility without agreement in advance may cause interference with the Olympics broadcast, and it thus requires thorough investigation."
The Gangwon Pyeongchang Police Department took the case from the Prosecutors' Office and completed its investigations on the victims through KT personnel and is planning to expand its investigations by summoning SK Telecom personnel.
