Damage from second-hand smoke due to cigarettes smoked in apartments such as on balconies and in bathrooms will be reduced starting next year.

According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the revision of the Multi-family Housing Management Act, including details regarding restrictions for damage from second-hand smoke within apartment buildings, will be enforced as of February 10 of next year.

According to the revision, if a victim reports cigarette smoke in apartments, the apartment keeper will be required to investigate and find the facts and advise the perpetrator to prevent the smoke from spreading to other floors or to restrict smoking altogether once the facts have been confirmed.
