About 8.5 percent of BMW vehicles that underwent emergency safety inspections were categorized as defective cars, and therefore, measures to replace faulty components or provide car rental services were carried out.

An official at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said that 8.5 percent of the total vehicles that underwent safety checkups were found to have faulty components.

BMW is accused of belated reaction to the problem because the carmaker is said to have been aware of similar problems that have happened in Europe since 2016.

The official said, "BMW said that there have been similar engine fires in Europe since 2016, and it has conducted tests to find the exact cause."
